Keeping the Curl

How many times have you spent hours in the bathroom curling your hair only to have it fall flat as soon as you step out of your house? This literally just happened to me last night. I spent almost two hours perfecting my locks and by the time I got to where I was going my hair was straight again. I used to be able to hold a curl forever but now, not even for a minute. I’m thinking it is because I dye my hair now and I did not used to.

But I digress…

So how do we make our curls last? Here’s how:

Start with day old hair: Hair holds a curl better if its dirty. You don’t have to go out greasy, but washing your hair and then curling it right away will only result in failure.

Products, Products, Products: It’s not about piling on the products its about using the right ones. Too many will weigh your hair down and not using any at all wont help either. Heat taming spray is the most important thing you can use. It protects your hair. Damaged hair wont hold any curls so use products like TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray. 1338-353210-therml_recovery_therml_cretions_het_tmer_spry_300x400

Now to actually hold the curl you need to add some texture. Try Catwalk Curl Collection Curlesque Curls Rock Amplifier. This product will enhance “the natural texture of your hair, this cream gives hold and control for defined curls and streamlined waves for a touchable, radiant finish.”

You don’t need a lot of hairspray to hold the curl either. You just need the right kind. Big Sexy Hair Spray and Play is my favorite but don’t hold it too close to your hair or it will get crunchy. Follow the directions! Hold it a few inches away and mist over the hair.

How to Look Cute in Business Clothes

Okay so at this age (22) we are basically adults, and adults need adult jobs and in order to get those adult jobs we have to look like, well, adults. A lot of people think this means dress pants, a button up, and a blazer, and while this is completely true it’s also completely boring. The good news is you don’t have to wear the classic button up, black pants, blah blah blah. You can look cute while still looking like you run a fortune 500 company, and I’ll show you how!

First off, you don’t have to wear the typical black pants. I never wear black dress pants. They just don’t make them for my body and they don’t look good on me. I don’t want to be uncomfortable all day so I don’t wear them! This is what I wear instead.

This Patterned Skirt from H&M is fun and still office appropriate. You can get it for $29.95

Pair it with this ASOS Petite Wrap Front Body Suit to give a clean tucked in look.

I think paring it with a blazer would look too busy but if you must opt for a cropped one that ends at the waist! This looks like a lot of black though right? Well we can fix that. Because the neckline is a V on the bodysuit we can pair it with a fun necklace. Pair it with a short necklace to start. Try this fun yellow one from H&M

Or this soft pink one for a more elegant look

Just remember a necklace like this is all the jewelry you need. It’s a statement necklace for a reason, let it speak for itself! If you absolutely have to wear earrings wear small studs. Or a very simple plain bracelet.

Remember, it is okay to have fun with your look no matter where you are!

How to Get a Sun-Kissed Glow Without Harming Your Skin

Its summer time and we all want tanned skin, but laying out in the sun all day does more harm than good. Not only are burns uncomfortable, they are dangerous. You can get skin cancer. Many people think of skin cancer as the easiest cancer to cure so they don’t worry about it. Just get that mole removed and you will be fine right? Wrong. While it is true that if you catch certain kinds of skin cancers early you may just need to get them removed but melanoma, a form of skin cancer, is the deadliest kind of all cancers. Why chance it?

Also, you can get skin cancer from tanning beds. Actually, skin cancer is on the rise because of tanning beds. Even if that does not scare you, just think of how wrinkly your skin is going to be from all of the UV damage. There are ways to get your glow on without damaging your skin and your health. Here’s how!

When I want an at home glow I use these products:

Body Image Body Benefits 2-in-1 Loofah Body Buff

Caress Tahitian Renewal Pomegranate Seeds and Coconut Milk Exfoliating Body Wash

Nivea Smooth Sensation Body Lotion

Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun Light Bronze Sunless Tanning Mousse

The first step to getting a sunless glow at home takes place in the shower. First you’ll need to take your body loofah and pour some of your caress body wash on it and wash your skin in a circular motion. This gets all of the dead skin off and prepares your skin for proper absorption!

Next, while your skin is still a little damp apply the Nivea body lotion all over. Make sure you put extra on places like your knee caps and your elbows!

After your lotion has completely dried, use the Jergens instant tan mousse. I like the mousse better than the lotion because it spreads lighter and easier. Make sure to spread an even application and let it dry before putting anything on!

Everything You Need to Know About Androgynous Fashion

Androgynous fashion has been everywhere lately, but some people seem to be confused by it. What is it? Who can wear it? Where can you get it? All these questions and more can be answered right here.

First off, lets define what it means to be androgynous. To be androgynous, according to Google, means to look partly female and partly male. It is important to understand that androgynous does not = gay. It simply refers to ones appearance. There are varying levels of androgyny. It all depends on how the individual wants to represent themselves.

There are a lot of androgynous models out there, which means they model both male and female clothing. Check out Rain Dove, Elliot Sailors, or Jack Paulo.

Now, androgynous fashion has been everywhere for a long time, you just may not have noticed. Stealing your guys flannel or wearing “boyfriend jeans” is a step in the androgynous direction. It can be fun to dress like the opposite sex. This does not mean you have to be a cross dresser to wear androgynous clothing. Wearing androgynous clothing means that men and women can wear it. It is not defined by gender. Sometimes it looks more masculine, like with button up shirts, and sometimes it looks feminine like with blouses. Androgynous fashion rejects categories, and that’s the gist of it. Think “Tomboy.”

Where can you buy androgynous fashion? A lot of brands are creating men’s clothing, but for women. This means shirts that typically look male are being structured for the female body, but in a way that men can wear it. Check out Androgyny whose mission statement is, “…we’re re-engineering menswear to fit the female body; to fit those who prefer button-ups to pencil skirts.”

Sometimes, however, the best explanations are those that come visually. Check out some androgynous fashion on Tumblr!

Festival Appropriate Clothing!

I recently went to Soundset, a huge hip hop music festival that happens in Minnesota. A lot of big names were there including Ludacris, Big Sean, and J.Cole. My biggest concern when going to this concert was not parking or ticket prices it was “What am I going to wear?” I have to wear something comfortable, but cute and I surely don’t want to ruin any shoes! So what does festival appropriate clothing look like?

Don’t wear heels. That should be a given. These outside music festivals happen in grass and the weather never works out how we want it to so it will probably rain, Rain means mud and you will get stuck in the mud and fall if you wear heels. Same goes for wedges. I also would not opt for sandals. You WILL get stepped on! Sneakers are a good option but I wore black combat boots like these Mossimo Supply Co. boots from Target.

Since it was raining, I knew these would be the best option. Basically don’t wear anything you don’t want ruined!

Clothing wise I opted for light jeans, a cute tank top and a flannel. It was rainy and a little cold, but I didn’t want to be covered up too much and have to move in a large crowd in a big jacket. The flannel kept me warm and I still looked nice!

Check out this flannel from Forever21!

I would also suggest not wearing a dress. The wind might pick it up and you’ll be mooning the whole crowed. The same goes for skirts. Wear something that will stay close to your body like shorts or jeans. Shorts if its hot, jeans if its cold.

If you don’t have to bring a purse, then don’t. It sucks but people are awful and you don’t want to get mugged.

Happy listening :)
